OK here are my thoughts on the 2 POGs. Just my way of revising. Might not make sense at some points, because this is where I shall sort out my thoughts.
A stake for everyone, opportunities for all.
Constitutes: The government presents everyone with equal opportunities, and provides a wide variety of schemes and policies to cater to the different needs.
Example: Education system, government utilises education as a platform to provide equal opportunities to all, by providing edusave, bursaries, scholarships and other incentives, complementing idea of meritocracy. A person quality of life is therefore determined by his merit and capabilities, as opposed to his social status. Opportunites are given for people to break out of poverty cycle>>> human geog??
Implication: Not everyone can take advantage of this policies and are thus sidelined in this meritocratic society, and hence do not have as much of a stake as they should have. They lose out to their peers.
Constitutes: A sense of belonging is inculcated. Singaporeans feel that they have a stake and are proud to be Singaporean. The living environment continues to be attractive. Singaporeans are rooted emotionally, through creating opportunities for active participation in decision making processes and provide feedback on policies. People feel a sense of belonging in having a say in what the nation does, as stakeholders of the society.
Example (positive): Government provides opportunites for which Singaporeans can air their views through speakers corner, permitted demonstrations in certain areas, and STOMP.
Example (negative): Casino debate. Large opposition but government still went ahead with it. Government does not value the views of the people enough? Probably allowed the debate so as to identify the anti-casino views and create measures to counter them so that there would be no reason for the people to disagree with the building of the casino. Government chooses to ignore the interests of the people for economic benefits and gains. The people do not have enough power to prevent the government to go ahead with plans they do not agree with, even if they are a majority and have opportunites to express their views and opinions. Active citizenry is redundant.
O.K. I am already losing myself here. I AM GOING TO DIE. And i still have another POG and the whole of chem. I am not prepared and not confident.
Someone save me from the evil clutches of exams.
